A trans woman will be playing a trans woman on Elementary.

More and more I feel like Robert Doherty was at some point a hardcore Sherlock fan who became fed up and went “I SHALL MAKE MY OWN SHOW WITH WOMEN AND MINORITIES EXPLORING ADDICTION STIGMA, ALSO MYSTERIES.”

Bless him.

I haven’t read past the first sentence of this post. I can’t. I am too choked up to go further. Oh my gosh, I am sitting here crying.

But the point, the point, is that whenever I hear someone talking about how it’s wrong to have sex and sexiness in YA novels, what I actually hear is this:

I’m terrified that the first fictional sex a teenage girl encounters might leave her feeling good about herself. I’m terrified that fictional sex might actually make teenage girls think sex can be fun and good, that reading about girls who say no and boys who listen when they say it might give them the confidence to say no, too – or worse still, to realise that boys who don’t listen to ‘no’ aren’t worth it. I’m terrified that YA novels might teach teenage girls the distinction between assault and consensual sex, and give them the courage to speak out about the former while actively seeking the latter. I’m terrified that teenage girls might think seriously about the circumstances under which they might say yes to sex; that they might think about contraception before they need it, and touch themselves in bed at night while fantasising about generous, interesting, beautiful lovers who treat them with consideration and respect. I’m terrified of a generation of teenage girls who aren’t shy or squeamish about asking for cunnilingus when they want it, or about loving more than one person at once, and who don’t feel shame about their arousal. I’m terrified that teenage girls might take control of their sexuality and, in so doing, take that control of them and their bodies away from me.

“An Odd Couple” By Roger Stonehouse, [source]
The image is often captioned with something akin to “cultural clash between modern and traditional lifestyles” and the ability of two different people who live different lifestyles to live together peacefully, and while it can and often is true, it’s a somewhat stereotypical misreading of the issues and lifestyles in Burma. Punk rebels have been a major underground resistance force in the country, as have graffiti artists, both perhaps perfect examples of ‘modern’ rebels, but Buddhist monks have also always been catalysts for change. See both the 2007 “Saffron Revolution”, anti-government protests originally started by Buddhist monks, and the monk protests over political prisoners in the war against ethnic rebels in 2011.
Both of these boys very likely have much more in common than you’d guess. And this really is a beautiful picture.

This pair is not in the least bit “odd” to me. I contain and embody both of these types. I’m both a Buddhist initiate and a smoking boozing rebel bad boy.
It’s only odd if you have a cartoon image of what a Buddhist monk is. In Asia, Buddhist monks are a large swath of human beings who span a great range of personas. It’s not unusual for them to be the most badass kid on the block.

Rochelle Ballantyne, 17, of Brooklyn is taking the chess world by storm. She is on the verge of becoming the first African-American female chess master and her journey has been documented in the film, Brooklyn Castle. Brooklyn Castle tells the stories of five members of the chess team at I.S. 318 middle school in Brooklyn.
Ballantyne, currently a senior in high school, also spoke of the budget cuts happening at I.S. 318, which would eliminate the chess program. “Kids have achieved so much because of the chess program at I.S. 318, and now because of budget cuts, that program might not be there anymore, and that’s really horrible,” she said. “It’s so sad that you can take out money from schools because education is what allows you to succeed in life. My brother goes to I.S. 318 now, and the chess team might not be able to go to nationals. When people watch the movie, I want them to see how important the school is to all of us, and how it molded our lives. We have to pave the way so that other kids can achieve what we’ve achieved.” When asked about her educational goals, she has her mind-set on an Ivy League education. “ I really want to go to the University of Pennsylvania or Stanford. I applied through QuestBridge, which is a scholarship program that has a partnership with those schools.”
This November, Ballantyne, has her focus on the 2012 World Youth Chess Championships to be held in Maribor, Slovenia from November 7-19.

Saw this convo and needed to make it. Image was found, but artist is still missing, so please tell me if anyone figures out who set up the sweet photoshop. All I did was slap on the text & logo and adjusted them to look good.

I realized how badly i wanted to see ads like this. We have such few kick-ass female characters and/or role models to look forward to. I’m debating making a whole series of ads like this to see how many BAMF ladies I can find and put them in a marketing position that actually paints women as tough-as-nails-bad-asses-who-don’t-take-shit-from-anyone. We sorely need more of them.
